Officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Kano State have foiled an attempt to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kurmawa.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Kano, saying the incident occurred on Sunday around noon.
According to Kofarnassarawa, a 40-year-old man allegedly attempted to throw the substance into the custodial centre but was apprehended by officers of the Armed Squad Unit following their vigilance and prompt response.
He said the operation was carried out under the supervision of the unit’s commander, CSC Usman M. Sale.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the officers for their vigilance, professionalism and commitment to maintaining security within custodial facilities.
Yusuf-Lakpene also reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance towards the smuggling of prohibited items into correctional centres and urged members of the public to desist from introducing illicit substances and other banned materials into the facilities.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.
The controller reaffirmed the command’s commitment to strengthening security measures across its custodial centres to ensure a safe environment for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
The incident comes months after a woman was arrested in August 2026 for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, reportedly for her son, who was on death row.
